SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Revolutionary Camden
DESCRIPTION:Author Derek Smith comes to the Revolutionary War Visitor Center to share his latest book about Camden during the Revolutionary War. \nWith two major battles occurring in Camden\, Smith argues that this small frontier town was crucial to British success or failure in the Southern Campaign.  \nBooks will be available for purchase before and after the program by the author. \nBook description: \n“Camden seems to have an evil genius about it. Whatever is attempted near that place is unfortunate.” These words were spoken by American Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene just days after his defeat at the battle of Hobkirk Hill. With the war at a stalemate in the north\, the British had turned their attention to the southern provinces with renewed vigor\, and in 1780\, the frontier village of Camden\, South Carolina\, found itself at the bloody epicenter of the American Revolution. This book is a history of Camden during the Revolutionary War\, where it functioned as a keystone stronghold in the Crown’s plan to quell the rebellion in the Carolinas and Georgia. The scene of two major battles and more than a dozen lesser clashes\, Camden represents a brutal yet fascinating chapter in the history of the American Revolution.”

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Nathanael Greene
DESCRIPTION:Author Salina Baker comes to the Rev War Center for a special Lunch & Learn to share her expertise on American General Nathanael Greene and promote her book\, The Line of Splendor. \nThe Line of Splendor will be available for purchase before and after the program for $20 by either cash\, check\, Paypal\, or Venmo. \nSalina B Baker is a multiple award-winning historical fiction author\, presenter\, and historian of the American Revolution. She has presented at events such as History Camp Boston and Valley Forge as well as Authors of the American Revolution Congress at Washington Crossing Historic Park and SAR/DAR chapters throughout Texas. She has been interviewed on podcasts such as Revolution 250 and American Revolution Podcast. Her extensive travels and research follow the footsteps of the compelling historical people\, places\, and events she passionately writes about and brings to life. She has published a biographical novel about Major General Nathanael Greene titled “The Line of Splendor\, A Novel of Nathanael Greene and the American Revolution” \n  \nPresentation: “General Nathanael Greene and the American Revolution” \nMajor General Nathanael Greene was a Quaker with little education or military experience who rose to become one of George Washington’s best battlefield commanders and heir apparent if something happened to Washington during the war. Faced with the difficulties of quartermaster general that led to battles with the Continental Congress\, his fortitude saved the Continental Army from starvation. Where other generals failed\, he succeeded in commanding the Southern Army and with his brilliant strategy\, drove the British from their outposts to their final surrender at Yorktown\, Virginia. But what did it cost this general from Rhode Island? \n  \nBook Description for “The Line of Splendor: A Novel of Nathanael Greene and the American Revolution” \nWhen the first shots of the American Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts on April 19\, 1775\, thirty-two-year-old Nathanael Greene\, a self-educated Quaker with no military experience\, dismayed his family and marched toward Boston as general of the Rhode Island provincial army. General George Washington recognized his unwavering belief in American independence and the qualities that catapulted him to a major general in the Continental Army. \nFrom the hard lessons learned on the battlefields of New York\, to his appointment as Quartermaster General during the harsh winter at Valley Forge\, his role in convicting the British spy who colluded to obtain the plans to West Point\, to the godsend who took command of the ragged remnants of the Southern Continental Army\, Nathanael Greene’s complex perseverance and brilliant strategies broke military doctrines. \nThis is the story of the man who rose to become a national hero by resuscitating and then propelling the American states to victory in their war for independence and the personal cost of that war.

SUMMARY:Home School Day: The American Revolution From Start to Finish
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, the Rev War Center offers a free homeschool day where small school groups can come together and experience one of the educational programs offered by the Center. A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. Programs are geared toward students in 3rd grade through high school. Younger students are welcome to attend and follow along\, but will need the assistance of their guardian throughout the program.  \nAdults are welcome to sit in on the program\, just be aware that the focus will be on teaching the young students present. \nSeptember Program: The  American Revolution: From Start to Finish  \nStudents will be broken up into groups and given a colony to represent\, creating their own Continental Congress. Throughout the program the groups will be asked how their colonies feel about certain events and whether or not they support the decisions being made. Ultimately students should be able to answer the question: How did 13 colonies\, that lost their southern army TWICE in three months and four days\, beat the global super power that was Great Britain? \n
